The Government of Canada is committed to providing a safe and equitable work environment for all employees, while ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect. Harassment and discrimination are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We have implemented policies, and training, as well as formal and informal recourse mechanisms, to ensure that leaders and employees have the tools they need to prevent and resolve workplace harassment and discrimination. We must continue our efforts in these areas.
Results of a new study just issued by the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada (APEX) on the health of Canada’s federal executives shows that depression has almost doubled in five years and that abrasion is rampant in the workplace. Also on the rise: mental health problems; medication for insomnia, depression or anxiety; sleep deprivation; and obesity.
This is not the first indication that the Government of Canada needs to take action on abrasion — harassment, bullying, demeaning behavior — in the workplace. But has the tipping point been reached with the findings of this study? Is there sufficient evidence now to act? Getting results for Canadians is worthy. Doing so at the expense of our most senior bureaucrats is not.
